Welcome to Your Adoption Journey
Adopting a pet is one of life's most rewarding experiences, but it's also a significant commitment. We're here to guide you through every step of the process, from your first visit to our shelter to the moment your new companion feels completely at home. This guide will help you understand what to expect throughout your adoption journey.
Before You Visit
What to Bring
- Valid ID: Driver's license or state-issued identification
- Proof of Address: Utility bill, lease agreement, or similar documentation
- Landlord Permission: If you rent, bring written permission from your landlord
- Payment Method: Cash, check, or credit card for adoption fees
- Patience: Take your time to meet different animals and find the right match
Questions to Consider
- What type of pet fits your lifestyle? (Active dog, calm cat, etc.)
- How much time can you dedicate to exercise and care?
- Do you have other pets? How will they react to a new companion?
- Are you prepared for the financial responsibility of pet ownership?
- What's your living situation? (House, apartment, yard access)
The Adoption Process
Visit & Meet Our Animals
When you arrive, our friendly staff will welcome you and help you meet our available pets. Take your time to interact with different animals. Ask questions about their personalities, medical history, and any special needs they may have.
Tip: Spend at least 20-30 minutes with any pet you're considering to ensure compatibility.
Complete the Application
Once you've found your perfect match, you'll fill out an adoption application. This helps us ensure the best possible match between you and your new pet. The application covers your living situation, pet experience, and lifestyle.
Most applications are approved on the same day, allowing you to take your pet home immediately.
Review Adoption Guidelines
You'll review our adoption guidelines, which include important commitments like spay/neuter requirements, return policies, and care standards. This ensures both you and your pet have the best possible experience.
Remember: If you can't care for your pet, you must return it to GJAS - no questions asked.
Pay Adoption Fees & Go Home
Complete the adoption by paying the required fees. Your pet will come with all necessary vaccinations, microchip, and spay/neuter (if age-appropriate). Then it's time to start your new life together!
Your adoption fee includes: vaccinations, deworming, rabies shot, microchip, and spay/neuter.

Senior Citizen Discount: $10 off adoption fee
Operation Save a Life
No adoption fees for qualifying service members:
- Military personnel (current or retired)
- Firefighters

Our Return Policy
No Questions Asked Return Policy
We understand that circumstances change, and sometimes an adoption doesn't work out as planned. That's why we have a no questions asked return policy.
If you need to return your pet:
- No judgment: We understand that life happens
- No questions: You don't need to explain your reasons
- No shame: Returning a pet is sometimes the most responsible choice
- Immediate acceptance: We'll take your pet back right away
- Continued care: We'll ensure your pet receives proper care

- Bring your pet back to our shelter during business hours
- We'll handle everything else
Remember: Your pet's welfare is our top priority. If you can't provide the care they need, returning them to us is the responsible and caring choice.

Common Post-Adoption Behaviors
Normal Behaviors
- Hiding or seeking quiet spaces
- Decreased appetite initially
- Sleeping more than usual
- Being cautious or shy
- Accidents in the house (dogs)
- Not using litter box immediately (cats)
Positive Signs
- Gradually exploring their new environment
- Starting to eat regularly
- Showing interest in toys or activities
- Seeking attention or affection

- Playing or showing curiosity
Tips for a Successful Transition
For Dogs:
- Establish a routine for feeding, walks, and playtime
- Provide a quiet, comfortable space to rest
- Start with short walks and gradually increase
- Use positive reinforcement for good behavior
- Be patient with house training
- Introduce new people and pets slowly
For Cats:
- Start with a small room and gradually expand access
- Provide hiding spots and high perches
- Keep litter boxes clean and accessible
- Use the same food initially, then transition slowly
- Allow them to approach you on their terms
- Provide scratching posts and toys
