A volunteer story
Why I Volunteer at the Animal Shelter — and Why You Can Too
By Kim Bartos · August 30, 2026
I often hear people say, “I could never volunteer at the shelter — I’d cry or want to take them all home.” I used to feel the same way. When I first started volunteering, my heart broke for every dog I met. But over time, I realized something powerful. I may not be able to take them all home, but I can make their time at the shelter happier, calmer, and full of love.
When I walk dogs, I have a little routine. First, we stroll across the street to the bench and get to know each other. I talk to them the whole time (I’m fluent in “dog,” after all!). Then we head to the red storage units for a little photo shoot to help them shine on social media. After that, we walk, play, practice commands, and just enjoy each other’s company.
It’s amazing how those small moments — a walk, a kind word, a little attention — can make such a big difference in their world. They become more social, more confident, and more ready to find their forever home or move to a rescue group.
Yes, there are moments that tug at my heart. But the joy of seeing a dog wag its tail, relax, or find a family because of the time I spent with them makes every tear absolutely worth it.
If you’ve ever thought about volunteering but felt afraid it would be too hard, I promise, the love and gratitude you’ll experience far outweigh the sadness. You won’t just change their day; you’ll change their life.
